Aurangabad production plantoverview

Audi manufactures cars for sale locally in the burgeoning Indian market at its plant in the State of Maharashtra. The Audi A6 has been in production at the plant in the university city of Aurangabad since 2006, and the Audi A4 since 2008. Annual production is scheduled to rise to over 2,000 of the Audi A6 and 11,000 of the Audi A4 by 2015.

The SAIPL group plant (Škoda Auto India Private Limited) was chosen as the location. The key criteria behind its selection were the outstanding infrastructure, established working processes, a large number of well-qualified workers and the good logistical position.

Production

The Audi A6 has been built at Aurangabad since November 2007 and the new Audi A4 since October 2008 – two months earlier than the original date for the start of production. An additional assembly line was installed at the Aurangabad plant for the Audi A4. The punctual delivery of materials at the assembly line is a logistical masterstroke: components, modules and painted vehicle bodies arrive by train, ship and truck. This freight has travelled more than 11,000 kilometres by the time it reaches the plant. Parts delivered whole from Germany include the painted bodies, the engines and the rear axles. The driving area, forward structure, front seats, doors, pedals and centre console are preassembled at the Indian plant.

Sales & marketing

Audi has been operating successfully in the Indian market for more than four years. As well as its exclusive production operations, consistent development and expansion of the sales and dealership structure are other key factors behind the company’s growing presence there. It has had its own sales subsidiary based in Mumbai since early 2007. This subsidiary coordinates all activities in the Indian market. In addition to exclusive production of the Audi A6 and Audi A4, the Audi A8, Audi Q7, Audi TT and Audi R8 are imported. In January 2008 Audi opened India's largest luxury-brand showroom in Gurgaon; with a floor area of over 1,200 square metres and 14 showcars, the new facility redefines the benchmark in this highly competitive growing market.
